My Consultancy
David Green is the Director and Principal of David J Green and Associates.
I operate as an independent consultant who offers a wide range of organisational development (OD) services and programs, focussing on leadership development, corporate culture and change, interpersonal development, teamworking and executive coaching. I have both consulted and managed in the field of OD for over 35 years, first in the public sector, in a utility, and in private enterprise, then for over 25 years in my own consultancy. I was Group Consultant - HR for an information technology company operating in Australia and South-East Asia, where I reported to the Managing Director, and was in the General Management Group.
My work with clients often involves multiple interventions, including extended leadership development programs of up to 15 months, intensive residential workshops, teamworking, change management design, and expert advice on organisational dynamics. As a process facilitator, I negotiate specific designs related to high levels of participation.
My extended experience in consulting, design and facilitation enables me to use a wide range of approaches and styles, ranging from driving intensive experiential workshops, to people skills development, or facilitating highly participative events such as Futuresearch and Open Space, through to individual coaching.
My clients have included private, public and not-for-profit organisations, operating in resources, logistics, health care, roads, environment, steel, leisure, transport, professional services, engineering construction, infrastructure maintenance, and IT.
Over the last 25 years, I have pioneered the application of story and metaphor to leadership development, where I employ narrative approaches in every aspect of the development process - relationship and trust building, managing the group dynamic and learning flow, teaching models and dynamic patterns, coaching, presentations, behaviour modelling, and storytelling as a leadership craft. I model and teach narrative as central to leading organisational transitions, and to surface, understand and drive workplace cultures and change.
I helped to launch the Centre for Narrative Leadership in England in 2007. I have been an Associate of the MBS Centre of Executive Education, and have worked in alliance with Outward Bound Australia, and with a range of consulting networks.
A key focus is in working with clients to create customised designs for the generation of real learning and change, which people leaders put into practice in their workplaces. A key methodology is that of a human systems approach, drawing on ‘new science’ theory and its systems metaphors, and chaos/complexity theory.
My approach focuses particularly on assisting managers and staff to learn how to create and sustain the enabling conditions for high performance and flexibility, by working with, rather than avoiding, the living human dynamics which underlie their organisations and teams.
All of my client workshops are experiential and group-focussed. I look to integrate individual, group and organisational learning, which includes engagement not only with relationships, learning, and group dynamics, but also the ever-present issues related to how power is transacted.
When appropriate, I collaborate with other independent consultants to design and deliver programs. I have delivered several innovative programs in co-operation with Outward Bound Australia, and am currently developing a new team leadership offering with Shawn Callahan of Anecdote.
