Franklin D Roosevelt
Franklin Delano Roosevelt (1882 – 1945), known as FDR, was President of the United States from 1933 until his death in 1945 - the only President elected for 3rd and 4th terms. In 1921, he contracted polio, which permanently paralysed his legs. He subsequently became a reforming Governor of New York state. After winning the Presidency in 1932, he instituted radical reforms to deal with the Great Depression, known as the New Deal, a variety of programs designed to produce relief, recovery, and reform. He created numerous programs to give relief to the unemployed and farmers while seeking economic recovery with various substantial programs. He also instituted major regulatory reforms related to finance, communications and labour, and presided over the end of Prohibition. In the early years of the Second World War, he provided support to the Allies, and after the bombing of Pearl Harbour, he brought the US into the war itself.
This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself - nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.
